La Belle et La Bete Collection

The first time I saw Jean Cocteau’s classic film La Belle et La Bete, (at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, California) I fell in love – not only with Jean Marias, (who plays both the Beast and the Prince) but with the look of it – so gorgeously elegant it takes your breath away, and romantic, all smoky shades of black and white and glittering light.

The film, made in 1946, is famous for its surreal quality and for how incredibly it used the existing VFX technology to create mystery, magic and enchantment.  Cocteau wanted the film to evoke the illustrations and engravings of Gustave Doré and the paintings of Jan Vermeer.

La Belle et La Bete is considered to be one of the finest fantasy films (No. 15 imdb) of all time.  When some months ago, I found a stash of filigree pieces and vintage rhinestones, visions of the film came back to me – and so I put the collection together with it in mind.  I wanted to capture the elegance, mystery and dazzle of the film, the lacy filigree on the Beast’s costume, the magic of his palace and of the jewels he gives to Beauty.

I’m excited that ten, handmade one-of-a-kind pieces from La Belle et La Bete Collection are now at Kristin Londgren’s fabulous boutique on 3rd St. in Los Angeles!  Click on the Belle et La Bete icon on the right sidebar to see some of the pieces —

A quote from a fearless woman!

Isadora Duncan was famous for many things, being the world’s first modern dancer, the first solo dancer, the first woman choreographer.  She lived a fearless life; her motto was “sans limites. ”   Sometimes she made mistakes, but she was always true to herself.   She was a gutsy women.  She didn’t call herself a feminist, (she died before the term was coined) but she truly was one. “You were wild once,” she said, “don’t let them tame you!”

Copper and Aphrodite

I love incorporating more than one metal in my designs, and I often use copper chains and findings for my necklaces and earrings. There’s something gorgeous in mixing copper and silver, copper and gold together, copper and bronze. Not only for the rich and beautiful color of copper but for it’s healing and spiritual nature. As far back as ancient Egypt, copper was recognized as having qualities to protect the wearer and to stimulate the mental and psychic flow of energy and was worn as a sign of wealth and power. One of the early sources of copper was the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea, (which is where it got it’s name).  Cyprus was known in ancient mythology as the island where the Goddess Aphrodite lived — when she wasn’t hanging out on Mt. Olympus or having affairs with gorgeous hunks!

Catherine de Medici

She walked the halls of power and had an obsession for beautiful jewelry.  Perhaps she wore something like this very necklace—when still a young girl—and her dreams were of love and magical things . . .

Catherine de Medici-Antique bronze pendant set with Swarovski crystals in blue and light apple green.  Two chains—antique 10k gold and fanciful copper with Czech glass beads.

Hard Candy

A friend in northern California just sent me an article from Harper’s Bazaar magazine about costume jewelry.  “The necklace is the prize catch of the season,” Bazaar says, “ . . . the single greatest accessory to update your look!  And designer costume is it!  Whimsical, conversation starters . . . ” Yes! Finally the fashion mags come around to what’s cool and affordable.  They even mention one-of-a-kind pieces as being the “it” jewels.

Dover Beach

Dover Beach—I saw this bird soaring over the white cliffs of Dover.  The sea below crashed all blue and green but the bird flew unerringly towards its home somewhere far away on land.  All in a dream or was it real?  “Ah love, let us be true to one another,” said the poem.

Hand assembled pendant of silver plated stamping, antique filigree and beautiful bronze bird on oval looped copper chain set with smoky topaz Czech glass beads.  Finished with antique pearl.  French clasp on the back makes length adjustable.

22” long and 3.5” drop

The “O” Necklace

"O" Necklace

This morning I made a necklace to celebrate the election — a bronze wedding ring from Africa on a copper chain. Love the shapes! Circles of life and the letter O.

I just put this necklace in the shop.

A whole new spirit!

What an extraordinary night. Obama is elected President! Never thought I’d see this happen. I can’t quite believe it. But history has been made and hope has prevailed. A whole new spirit has come alive.
