What Does a Woman Really Want?
. . . And speaking of the knights and ladies, I just came across an intriguing story about King Arthur. It was written ages ago but like so many fairy tales and legends, it has total relevance for today. Here it is:
Once upon a time, King Arthur was commanded (why he had to do this is another story altogether) on pain of death—to bring the true answer to this question:
“What is it that women most desire?”
It seemed a simple thing, but as he pondered it, he realized he didn’t really have a clue. He was given exactly one year to find the answer, and during this time he traveled to many lands, riding east and riding west, and asking everyone he met what they thought the answer was. Everyone of course had an opinion: money, an opulent castle, flattery, a handsome hunk, and on and on . . .
But he didn’t think he had yet found the answer—
Time passed, the year was nearly over. And one day, while Arthur was riding thoughtfully through a deep forest, he came upon a hideous old woman who lived in a tree. She was so horrible, he could not even look at her. “What!” she cried out angrily, “you won’t even speak to me? Even though I’m not beautiful, I may perhaps resolve your problem .
“I’m in dire straights,” said Arthur, “If you can help me, I will give you any reward you want.”
“Do you swear to this?” asked the hideous old lady.
“Yes I swear it,” answered Arthur.
“Well then,” she mumbled, “come closer and I’ll whisper the secret in your ear.”
